Course Description

Exercise-induced paradoxical vocal fold motion (EI-PVFM) is a complex upper airway disorder that occurs in some athletes and is characterized by a closing of the vocal folds during respiration, resulting in difficulty breathing. Using Buteyko breathing techniques, the patient learns to breathe symptom-free at rest and during exertion, eliminating the need for a “rescue” breathing technique.

We will discuss the nature of EI-PVFM, how it differs from Exercise Induced Bronchospasm (EIB), and the impact of dysfunctional breathing on EI-PVFM.  Moreover, this course will provide a practical and clinically focused approach to evaluating and treating individuals with EI-PVFM. Also, we will focus on the role of breathing dysfunction and breathing retraining in upper airway disorders.
By going beyond the basic Buteyko techniques, you will learn how to correct poor breathing habits and make breathing more efficient and functional during rest and physical exertion. The relationship between core function, breathing, posture, and movement will be emphasized, so we can understand and utilize the interconnectivity of these systems to optimize wellness and athletic performance.

You will learn the components of conducting a holistic EI-PVFM evaluation, the cornerstones of a holistic approach to treating this condition, and therapeutic methods used in a practical, systematic approach. Case studies will be reviewed, and videos of therapy sessions will be shown.  Upon completing this course, you will be able to use your knowledge of Buteyko breathing and apply it practically in evaluating and treating EI-PVFM.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the training, SLP's will be able to:

  • Identify dysfunctional breathing in their patients.
  • Identify and modify causes of breathing dysfunction.
  • Learn how to monitor and improve their own breathing.
  • Help patients establish better breathing habits.
  • Deliver breathing retraining program to help restore physiologically normal breathing.
  • List 5 distinctive differences between PVFM and EIB.
  • Identify the 5 major components of a holistic approach to conducting an EI-PVFM evaluation.
  • List 4 differences between using traditional methods vs using a Buteyko-based, holistic approach when treating EI-PVFM patients.
  • List the 4 major cornerstones of a holistic approach to treating EI-PVFM.
  • Teach strategies to improve exercise capacity and to enhance sport performance.
